The local community recently gathered to celebrate the bright futures of 49 graduates during the Scholarship Foundation of Indian River County’s 61st Annual Award Ceremony. Held at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, the moving event brought together parents, educators, and philanthropists to honor the hard work and dedication of the area’s upcoming college freshmen. With deep roots in Vero Beach and the wider Treasure Coast, the foundation once again proved its unwavering commitment to local education by making a staggering financial investment in the next generation.
At this year’s highly anticipated 61st Annual Award Ceremony, the Scholarship Foundation of Indian River County proudly awarded 104 individual scholarships totaling $841,150 to local students heading to 21 different colleges and universities.
Executive Director Camilla Wainright warmly welcomed the attendees, setting the stage for an emotionally resonant evening. SFIRC President Scott Schwartz, himself a former scholarship recipient, beautifully contextualized the magnitude of the awards. He noted that the impressive dollar amount is far more than a simple financial transaction; rather, it is a testament to the sacrifices made by families and the profound vision of local donors. Schwartz reminded the audience that everyone present was standing on the shoulders of others who had invested in their lives. He expressed that while the ceremony happens annually, the inspiring nature of the room and the unique stories of the students ensure the event never feels routine.
The foundation’s legacy of giving spans several decades. Originally established in 1965 around a humble dining room table under the name Dollars for Scholars, the organization has grown into a philanthropic powerhouse for Indian River County. Over its rich history, the foundation has distributed more than $17.2 million to 3,236 local students, fundamentally changing the trajectory of countless lives.
This life-changing impact was powerfully illustrated by guest speaker Krystal Moore-Gayle, a 2022 graduate of Indian River Charter High School. Her scholarship enabled her to graduate completely debt-free with a computer science degree from the University of Central Florida. She shared a charming anecdote from her time in the gifted program at Osceola Magnet School, where a malfunctioning robot sparked her passion for out-of-the-box thinking. Today, she works successfully as a Microsoft SharePoint and Power Platform Administrator at KENPAT, while also giving back as a mentor to undergraduate STEM students. Moore-Gayle passionately urged the new scholarship recipients to personally thank the individuals who supported their educational journeys.
The ceremony also honored local history through touching memorial awards, paying tribute to late attorneys, educators, philanthropists, and young lives lost too soon. Highlights of the evening’s special presentations included:
- The Jasmine Schwadron Memorial Scholarship: This inaugural award was presented by Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA) founder Edie Widder. It honors the late ORCA educator and was awarded to Rosemary McCullough, an Indian River Charter High School senior who plans to study environmental sustainability at the University of Central Florida.
- The 2026 Richardson Scholarship: Recognized as the foundation’s highest honor, this prestigious award went to Veronica Kostan of Sebastian River High School. Kostan ranked fourth in her graduating class of 416 students with an outstanding 4.6 GPA. A dedicated weekly volunteer at Cleveland Clinic, she will attend Florida State University to major in nursing, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
