Two young men from the local Barefoot Bay community lost their lives this past weekend in a severe traffic collision involving two motorcycles and an SUV. The fatal crash occurred on Sunday morning in Micco, just north of the Indian River County line, prompting an extended closure of the roadway as authorities investigated the scene.
According to a report released by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident took place at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Micco Road, located just east of the intersection with Babcock Street. Troopers identified the victims as a 24-year-old male operating a Suzuki motorcycle and a 19-year-old male riding a Honda. Both individuals were residents of Barefoot Bay.
Details of the Collision
Investigators determined that the two motorcyclists were traveling eastbound on Micco Road at the time of the crash. The FHP report indicated that both motorcycles were traveling at speeds exceeding the posted speed limit.
Simultaneously, a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling westbound on the same road. The SUV was driven by a 71-year-old woman from Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, accompanied by a 79-year-old male passenger from Wyoming, Pennsylvania. The collision occurred when the driver of the Tahoe attempted to make a left turn into a private driveway, crossing directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycles.
The impact was severe, causing both motorcycles to veer off the roadway where they subsequently caught fire. The riders were ejected into a nearby ditch and were pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency responders.
Status of the Investigation
The occupants of the SUV sustained only minor injuries during the crash and declined medical transport at the scene. As of Sunday, no citations had been issued to the driver of the Tahoe, though the Florida Highway Patrol has stated that the investigation remains active and ongoing. The names of the deceased have not been released pending full family notifications.
Following the crash, Micco Road remained closed for several hours on Sunday while emergency crews managed the wreckage and investigators reconstructed the accident. This area has been a point of concern for local residents, who have noted an increase in traffic volume and accidents due to ongoing developments in the vicinity.
Motorcycle Safety Concerns
This tragic event contributes to a concerning rise in motorcycle fatalities within the region this year. Officials are using this incident to remind the public of critical safety measures: riders are urged to strictly adhere to speed limits, while drivers of larger vehicles are reminded to remain vigilant and double-check for two-wheeled vehicles before making turns or changing lanes.
We will continue to monitor updates from the Florida Highway Patrol regarding this investigation.
