High school sports are a cornerstone of community spirit here on the Treasure Coast, and the latest round of performances has highlighted the incredible talent residing in our local schools. The TCPalm Boys Athlete of the Week poll is currently active, seeking to recognize standout student-athletes who excelled between January 5 and January 10. This week’s list of nominees features impressive achievements in basketball, soccer, and wrestling, with a specific spotlight on a standout senior from Vero Beach High School.

For residents of Indian River County, the nomination of Brandon James offers a chance to support local talent. A senior at Vero Beach High School, James has been a driving force on the basketball court. His recent performance was instrumental in securing two victories for his team.

Brandon James (Vero Beach) averaged 20.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game to lead his squad to a pair of wins. Notably, he shot an impressive 59 percent from the field during this stretch.

While James represents Vero Beach, the competition across the wider Treasure Coast region is stiff. The poll includes athletes from St. Lucie and Martin counties who have posted remarkable statistics in their respective sports.

Additional Nominees for Athlete of the Week:

  • Ethan Chevres (Tradition Prep): In basketball, this senior averaged 20 points per game on 46 percent shooting, while also contributing 4.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game across two victories.
  • Blake Elder (Jensen Beach): A senior wrestler, Elder took home first place in the 285-pound weight class at the Cradle Cancer Invitational. He secured the title with a tight 7-6 decision over Charlotte’s Jaxon Newton in the championship match.
  • Jaiven Jackson (Morningside Academy): This junior basketball player averaged 25.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game over a three-game span, shooting 60 percent from the field.
  • Josue Mendoza (South Fork): On the soccer field, this junior netted five total goals during two wins, including a four-goal performance against Clewiston.
  • Melvin Pabon (Martin County): A sophomore soccer standout, Pabon recorded five goals across two wins, scoring four times in a match against Okeechobee.
  • Ian Tovar (Jensen Beach): This senior soccer player totaled three goals during two victories, including two goals in a triumph over Wellington.
  • The community is encouraged to participate in the selection process. Voting for the Boys Athlete of the Week remains open until noon on Thursday. The winner of the poll will receive a commemorative Athlete of the Week shirt provided by BSN SPORTS. This initiative is proudly sponsored by Audi Stuart, continuing a tradition of celebrating youth athletic excellence throughout our region.
