Micco Resident and Sebastian River High School Volunteer Releases New Memoir
A local resident of the Treasure Coast has turned seven decades of diverse life experiences—from the depths of the ocean to the high-pressure environment of newsrooms—into a newly published memoir. Kenneth A. Millman, a Micco resident and familiar face at Sebastian River High School, recently released his book, blending humor, history, and personal reflection.
The book, titled Memoirs of an Old Fart: Tales I’ve Told So Often I’m Beginning to Believe Them Myself, is now available through major retailers. It offers readers a collection of stories that traverse Millman’s journey through military service, a prolific journalism career, and life on the water.
From Submarines to Newsrooms
Millman’s background reads like an adventure novel itself. Before settling in the Indian River County area, he served as a submarine diver in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War era. Following his military service, he pursued a degree at the University of Colorado, which launched a significant career in journalism.
His professional path included roles at nine major publications. Notably, Millman began at The Denver Post and eventually retired in 2001 as the editor of special publications at The Miami Herald. His editorial expertise also extended to niche publications, serving as editor-in-chief for Wave and Worldwide Angler magazines.
A Life on the Water and Local Community Ties
After retiring from the fast-paced world of journalism, Millman spent a decade as a sailing charter captain in the Bahamas. Today, he has anchored himself in the local community. Residing in Micco, Millman remains active by volunteering as a wrestling coach at Sebastian River High School, mentoring the next generation.
The memoir pays homage to his father, Henry Hart Millman, a World War II veteran, and explores themes of integrity, grit, and family resilience. Through the book, Millman aims to show how everyday moments can transform into enduring life lessons.
“Stories are how we stay alive long after we’re gone.”
