The Treasure Coast law enforcement community is entering a new chapter today as the City of Fort Pierce officially welcomes David M. Smith as its new Chief of Police. Following a period of transition for the department, Smith takes the helm with the unanimous backing of city leaders and a mandate to bring stability and renewed focus to local policing.
The formal swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Monday, February 2, at 9:00 a.m. inside the City Commission Chambers at City Hall, located at 100 North U.S. Highway 1. City officials have noted that physical space inside the chambers is limited; consequently, they have arranged multiple avenues for the public to witness the event remotely. Residents and interested parties across the region can view a live stream on the official City of Fort Pierce website, or watch the broadcast on FPTV Channel 27 if they are Comcast subscribers.
Smith’s confirmation comes with significant expectations and a robust compensation package. The Fort Pierce City Commission unanimously approved his contract, which includes an annual salary of $190,000 and the use of a fully equipped police vehicle. In an effort to ensure immediate and effective leadership, the contract also includes a provision for a performance evaluation after his first six months of service.
Commissioners praised the efforts of interim Chief Robert Ridle and expressed confidence that Smith will bring stability and renewed direction to the department.
A major stipulation of Smith’s employment is a residency requirement, ensuring the Chief is a true part of the community he serves. Smith has reportedly signed a lease to live within the city limits, meeting the requirement to establish residency by February 1, immediately prior to assuming command. While he begins his tenure now, his family is expected to join him in Fort Pierce later in the year.
This appointment marks the conclusion of a months-long search process that began after the resignation of former Chief Diane Hobley-Burney in May 2025. During the interim period, the department was led by Robert Ridle. As Smith steps into the role, city officials are emphasizing the importance of community engagement and leadership continuity for the future of public safety in the area.
