In a remarkable display of local talent and discipline, the Singing Sharks choir from Sebastian River High School has proudly represented Indian River County by sweeping top honors at a prestigious national competition.

Competing at the renowned Music in the Parks Festival Competition held at Universal Orlando, the dedicated student vocalists captured first place across all four categories they entered. The event draws competitive school choirs from across the nation, making the local group’s sweeping victory a significant milestone for the Treasure Coast arts community.

Under the direction of Larry J. Stanley, the Sebastian River High School Singing Sharks not only dominated their musical categories but also brought home the coveted Esprit de Corps Trophy, awarded for outstanding character, behavior, and spirit.

Against stiff national competition, the local students showcased their versatility and vocal excellence in multiple specialized categories. The group’s impressive accolades from the festival include:

  • Mixed Choir: The group earned a highly respectable Excellent rating.
  • Encore: The ensemble achieved first-place Superior ratings in both the Renaissance Choir and Show Choir divisions.
  • Harmonix: The vocalists secured a first-place Superior rating in the Jazz Choir category and went on to claim the top prize for All-Around Best Choir.
  • Individual Recognition: Student Luciana Dettori was awarded the Best Soloist title for her standout performance alongside the Harmonix group.

Beyond their musical achievements, the choir’s reception of the Esprit de Corps Trophy holds special significance for the local school district. Rather than focusing solely on vocal skill, festival judges, host school staff, and event directors assess participating groups on their decorum, discipline, attitude, and overall presentation. The Singing Sharks were unanimously recognized as the top ensemble for their impeccable professionalism and positive demeanor from the moment they arrived at the theme park.

Local school leaders commended the students for demonstrating strong character and profound school pride on a national stage. This sweeping victory marks yet another success for the thriving Sebastian River High School choral program under Stanley’s continued guidance, highlighting the high-quality arts education available to students in the Indian River County area.
