A violent early-morning home invasion at a local Vero Beach motel has left two suspects in custody and one victim with severe injuries. The Vero Beach Police Department responded swiftly to the incident, apprehending the individuals shortly after they allegedly forced their way into a room, assaulted the occupants, and fled with stolen valuables.
The terrifying ordeal unfolded just before 2:30 a.m. on April 21 at the Palm Inn, located along the U.S. Highway 1 corridor in Vero Beach. According to police reports, a man and a woman had been residing at the motel for several weeks while dealing with ongoing family issues at their primary residence. Their stay was violently interrupted when two individuals, later identified as 49-year-old Michael Allen Jackson and 47-year-old Leigh Hagler Kennedy, knocked on their motel room door and forcefully pushed their way inside.
Once inside the room, the situation escalated rapidly into a brutal assault. Investigators report that Jackson armed himself with an aluminum baseball bat and repeatedly struck the male victim in the head. Simultaneously, Kennedy reportedly brandished a knife, threatening the female occupant and ordering both victims to hand over their cash and jewelry. After securing various personal items, the duo fled the scene in a white Chevrolet SUV.
The quick response by Vero Beach police officers resulted in the suspects being located and apprehended within minutes of the violent attack, alongside the recovery of key evidence discarded near the scene.
Patrol officers immediately began a canvas of the area and spotted the suspect vehicle shortly after the initial disturbance report. During the traffic stop, officers noted that Jackson and Kennedy closely matched the detailed descriptions provided by the victims. Law enforcement officials also observed the passenger attempting to conceal a purse by stuffing it into the back seat—an item investigators believe was stolen during the motel robbery. Both suspects were taken into custody without further incident.
Following the arrest, investigators successfully tracked down the primary weapon used in the assault. The aluminum baseball bat was recovered from a dumpster at a nearby Burger King, also situated on U.S. Highway 1. Meanwhile, the male victim was transported to the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital to receive medical treatment for significant head trauma. The female victim was reported to be understandably shaken but physically unharmed during the altercation.
Both suspects are currently being held at the Indian River County Jail facing serious felony charges stemming from the attack.
