A former middle school athletic director and gym teacher from Indian River County has been sentenced to a decade behind bars following an intensive investigation and multi-state FBI manhunt. The case, which deeply impacted the local community, concluded this Monday when federal prosecutors announced a 10-year prison sentence, which will be followed by 25 years of supervised release.

The investigation originated locally in 2024 when the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office received disturbing reports regarding an inappropriate relationship between the educator, identified in court records as Johnson, and a middle school student. Detectives discovered that the relationship had been ongoing for an entire year. Upon learning of the allegations, officials from the School District of Indian River County immediately removed Johnson from the campus and terminated her employment.

When local detectives established probable cause to search Johnson’s residence, they found that she had already fled the state of Florida. The situation quickly escalated into a federal matter as investigators uncovered additional criminal acts. These incidents took place across multiple states during travel tournaments for the girls’ basketball team that Johnson coached. The interstate nature of the crimes prompted the full involvement of the FBI, leading to a nationwide search.

The manhunt finally came to an end in August of 2025 when federal agents apprehended Johnson in Kansas City, Missouri. Following her capture, she pleaded guilty in February to charges of transporting a minor across state lines with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

The collaboration between local Indian River County deputies, federal agents, and school district officials was instrumental in bringing this case to a close.

A former Indian River County athletic director was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison and 25 years of supervised release for transporting a minor across state lines. The conviction followed a multi-state manhunt that ended with an arrest in Missouri. Emphasizing the community’s commitment to student safety, Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers stated, “Every child in Indian River County deserves to feel safe at school. Our detectives, working alongside the FBI, made sure this victim was heard and that Johnson was held accountable for her actions. We will never stop fighting to protect our kids.”
