As household expenses and grocery prices continue to climb across the Treasure Coast, more local families are finding it challenging to put meals on the table. Right here in Vero Beach, the Food Pantry of Indian River County is stepping up to meet this growing community need, but they are asking for the public’s support as demand shifts from temporary crisis relief to everyday assistance.
Operating entirely through the dedication of local volunteers, the nonprofit provides essential supplemental food assistance to residents facing food insecurity. The statistics from the past year highlight the vital role this organization plays in our area. In 2025 alone, the pantry distributed over 380,000 pounds of food, which equates to more than 325,000 meals. Assistance reached over 2,300 households, with local children and seniors making up more than half of the individuals served.
According to Mark Rice, the organization’s director of development, approximately 11 percent of Indian River County residents and 16 percent of local children experience food insecurity.

Currently, the Food Pantry of Indian River County is open five days a week and serves approximately 50 households each day. Depending on the size of the family, clients can receive assistance up to twice a month. The provisions include a variety of essential items:
- Canned goods and dry staples
- Fresh milk and frozen meat
- Everyday pantry necessities
- Fresh bread, whenever available
Sandy Bolway, who has volunteered at the distribution window with his wife for the past three years, notes that the need is more visible than ever. While some residents may feel hesitant or embarrassed to ask for help, the volunteers strive to foster a welcoming, judgment-free environment, reminding everyone that community members face different struggles at various times in their lives.
With summer in full swing and local children away from school-provided meals, grocery budgets for many Indian River County families are stretched even thinner. To keep up with this sustained demand, the pantry relies heavily on community generosity. Monetary donations are exceptionally impactful, allowing the organization to monitor prices, buy in bulk, and stretch every dollar further.
Currently, the pantry is actively raising funds for a new walk-in freezer and refrigerator. This crucial equipment upgrade will significantly expand their capacity to safely store fresh produce and larger quantities of meat for local families.
