The community of Vero Beach is reeling from another tragic railway incident after a man was struck and killed by a southbound Brightline passenger train on June 21. Local authorities have determined the heartbreaking event to be an apparent suicide, marking a grim milestone for the region’s railway operations.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Steve Greer, crews from Indian River County Fire Rescue were originally dispatched to the scene to provide emergency medical support but were canceled en route. Vero Beach Police Department officials called off the rescue response after arriving at the tracks and pronouncing the individual dead at the site.
Vero Beach Police Officer Kelsea Marty confirmed to local news outlets that the fatal collision was officially ruled a suicide following a preliminary investigation of the scene and witness accounts.
The incident unfolded rapidly as the Brightline train was traveling southbound through the city at approximately 79 mph. - He was then seen running directly toward the railway as the high-speed train approached the area.
- Tragically, the individual intentionally laid flat on his stomach across the tracks, positioning his head on the west rail and his feet across the east rail.
This devastating loss represents the 10th fatal incident involving a Brightline train on the Treasure Coast since 2023, shining a renewed spotlight on railway safety across Indian River County. Recent months have seen similar tragedies in our immediate local area. On May 26, a 68-year-old man riding a bicycle was killed following a collision with a train. Previously, on June 4, 2025, a resident of nearby Sebastian was also fatally struck by a passenger train.
