Residents of Indian River County and the wider Treasure Coast community have been on high alert this week following the unsettling discovery of two bodies in the Sebastian area. While the geographical proximity and timing of these discoveries naturally sparked public concern, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office has clarified that there is currently no evidence linking the two incidents. However, local authorities are strictly treating both cases as suspicious as they await further medical analysis.
The first investigation began on Monday when an individual fishing along the west shoreline near U.S. Highway 1 and the north county line discovered a body. The deceased has been identified as 44-year-old James Thompson, a resident of neighboring Brevard County. According to Sheriff Eric Flowers, Thompson had been staying at a hotel in Sebastian with his girlfriend. He was last seen walking northbound along U.S. Highway 1 on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities disclosed that Thompson had a documented history of mental health struggles and fentanyl use. Investigators learned that he had purchased methamphetamine on July 3rd and had entered a manic state in the days preceding his death. An initial medical examination revealed only a minor contusion on his eyebrow, with no signs of violent trauma.
The community’s concern escalated on Wednesday afternoon when a second, heavily decomposed body was discovered in the shrubbery along the east shoreline near 14510 U.S. Highway 1. Startlingly, this location is situated just across the street from where Monday’s discovery occurred. The second deceased individual is a 65-year-old man who was living temporarily with his brother in Sebastian.
Law enforcement officials revealed a complex background for the unnamed 65-year-old. He had a severe history of seizures and had been taken to a hospital by his brother on Sunday. Refusing medical care, the man left the facility against medical advice, reportedly still wearing his hospital socks when his brother last saw him walking north at 7:30 a.m. In addition to his health issues, the man was out on pretrial release for an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charge in Broward County. The Plantation Police Department was actively seeking a warrant for his arrest for absconding his release conditions.
Despite the eerie coincidence of the locations, preliminary autopsies for both men showed no stab wounds or other indicators of physical violence. The true cause of death for both individuals will rely heavily on pending toxicology reports. In the meantime, the sheriff’s office is issuing a stark warning to the community regarding the local narcotics supply.
Obviously we have nothing that leads us to believe that this is anything but two random incidents that unfortunately happened in the same area. But also with these drug issues, we’ve had some overdose issues, and it’s possible that there’s some bad fentanyl or methamphetamine or something that’s on the streets that could be deeper than just these issues. So I would just urge caution to any of our drug users or abusers: seek treatment as soon as possible.
Sheriff Flowers emphasized that the department is thoroughly reviewing the backgrounds of both men to trace who may have sold them narcotics, noting that any death not deemed natural is automatically classified as suspicious.
