The John’s Island Community Service League recently celebrated the conclusion of another highly impactful philanthropic season in Vero Beach, hosting its annual Closing Luncheon. The event brought together dedicated members and executive directors from local nonprofit organizations to reflect on a year defined by extraordinary generosity and vital community support throughout Indian River County.
Board President Michelle Julian shared remarkable news during the gathering, revealing that the league awarded more than $2.1 million in grants and scholarships over the past year. This vital local funding was made possible through membership dues, generous donations, and a series of successful community events.
“This includes an 11.8 percent increase just in our annual grants alone over last year and an incredible 75 percent increase in scholarships awarded. To everyone who volunteered, donated, showed up at an event, joined a team, or supported us in any way, thank you very much. We truly could not do this without you,” stated Julian.
A major highlight of the luncheon’s philanthropic contributions included a generous $51,800 check presented by Rennie Gibb on behalf of Legacy Grand Sponsor Bob Gibb and the John’s Island Real Estate Company.
During the business portion of the meeting, various board and committee leaders provided updates detailing precisely how the impressive $2.1 million is being distributed across the community:
- Rigorous Agency Grants: Funding was carefully allocated to local nonprofit agencies recognized for delivering the highest quality of service to Vero Beach residents.
- Record-Breaking Scholarships: An impressive $135,800 was awarded to 21 deserving local recipients to help further their educational pursuits.
- Strategic Grants: A total of $200,000—an increase of $10,000 from the previous year—was dedicated to targeted local initiatives focusing on health, housing, education, and food insecurity.
The luncheon also featured an inspiring address by Indian River County School Superintendent David Moore. Introduced by Hope Woodhouse and celebrated as the 2025 Florida Superintendent of the Year, Moore detailed the district’s incredible transformation since his arrival in 2019. He noted that despite the area’s overall wealth, the county was previously ranked 38th out of 67 districts in the state. By empowering local school staff at all levels and aligning resources to better train educators, Moore proudly reported that the school district has vaulted from 38th to the second-highest ranking in Florida.
Reminding attendees of the ongoing importance of civic engagement, Woodhouse urged members to verify their voter registration and mail-in ballots ahead of the vital August 18 primary, an election that will shape the future of the local school board, county commission, and hospital district.
