A routine emergency response to a residential fire in Fort Pierce quickly escalated into a major narcotics bust for Treasure Coast law enforcement this week. Authorities arrested a 50-year-old resident after first responders discovered a significant stash of illicit drugs and a firearm inside the partially burned home.
First responders extinguished a residential fire in Fort Pierce, inadvertently uncovering a drug trafficking operation that led to the seizure of MDMA, cocaine, fentanyl, marijuana, and a firearm.
On Tuesday, local firefighters and deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a reported house fire located on the 3400 block of Avenue I. Upon arriving at the scene, fire rescue crews swiftly extinguished the flames, successfully preventing the property from being completely engulfed and destroyed.
However, the situation shifted drastically during a routine safety walkthrough of the structure. Amidst the fire debris and ashes, firefighters spotted a large, suspicious quantity of multi-colored pills.
Detectives from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Division were immediately called to the scene. After confirming the presence of narcotics, detectives secured a search warrant to thoroughly sweep the property.
The subsequent search yielded a substantial seizure of illegal drugs, distribution materials, and weaponry. According to authorities, the confiscated items included:
- 270 grams of MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy)
- 711 grams of marijuana
- 15 grams of cocaine
- 2 grams of fentanyl
- A Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver
- Various materials utilized to prepare narcotics for street-level distribution
Following the discovery, authorities arrested the resident of the home, identified as Mario Bryant. Bryant was taken into custody and booked on multiple severe felony charges. His charges encompass trafficking in MDMA, possession of fentanyl, possession of marijuana with intent to sell or deliver, possession of cocaine, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Investigators are still working to determine the official cause of the house fire. The swift action of local firefighters not only saved the surrounding St. Lucie County neighborhood from potential fire damage but also removed dangerous narcotics from the streets of Fort Pierce.
