Welcome the new school year with a fresh perspective on student dining! As students head back to the classrooms in Vero Beach and the surrounding areas, the School District of Indian River County is rolling out a much-anticipated culinary makeover for its cafeteria menus.
District Superintendent David Moore recently announced that local schools are moving away from traditional, reheated meals. Instead, the district is making a significant investment in preparing fresher, made-in-house options to fuel students throughout their busy academic days. This change is exceptionally impactful for the local community, as approximately 70 percent of Indian River County students currently qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
By incorporating direct feedback from the students themselves, the district is introducing exciting and interactive new lunch lines.
Key updates to the local cafeteria experience this year include:
- A reduction of highly processed foods on the daily menu.
- Interactive, build-your-own meal stations.
- Freshly prepared salad and taco options tailored to student preferences.
- A stronger commitment to in-house cooking rather than simply reheating pre-packaged items.
Superintendent Moore emphasized that the students were highly vocal about their dietary preferences, specifically asking the district to remove processed items in favor of better, healthier choices. Moore, who has personally taste-tested many of the new offerings, believes the students will immediately notice the positive difference when they walk through the cafeteria lines this academic year.
The School District of Indian River County is actively transforming its lunch program by replacing highly processed, reheated foods with fresh, made-in-house meals and build-your-own options, directly answering student requests for healthier daily choices.
This fantastic local initiative not only promotes better health and nutrition but also ensures that the large population of Treasure Coast students relying on school meals receives high-quality, delicious, and fresh food every single weekday.
