Indian River County Sheriff’s Office deputies successfully de-escalated a volatile situation, safely rescuing a man who had threatened to jump from the edge of the bridge.
A two-hour standoff on Vero Beach’s 17th Street Bridge ended without injury after the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiation Team successfully talked a distressed man, who was wanted on an outstanding burglary warrant, back from the ledge.
The incident unfolded after deputies received critical information regarding an individual wanted on an active warrant out of the Port St. Lucie Police Department. The warrant cited charges of burglary with battery. According to official reports, the man had recently contacted his mother and made concerning statements about his well-being. This prompted an immediate law enforcement search, which located the distressed man on top of the prominent Vero Beach bridge.
Upon arrival, first responders found that the man had already climbed over the bridge’s safety railing. To manage the crisis and ensure maximum safety, a comprehensive response was established by local agencies:
