A tragic hit-and-run collision in Vero Beach South has claimed the life of a 48-year-old local resident, prompting an intensive ongoing search by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and state troopers. The fatal incident occurred late Sunday evening and resulted in the complete closure of Eighth Street for six hours as authorities painstakingly processed the scene.
According to crash investigators, the collision took place at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9. The unidentified bicyclist was riding an e-bike westbound along Eighth Street, traveling directly in front of a Ford F-150 pickup truck. In an apparent attempt to avoid the cyclist, the driver of the truck swerved in a southwesterly direction, partially crossing into the eastbound traffic lane. Despite this evasive maneuver, the right side of the pickup struck the bicyclist, knocking him to the ground.
Rather than stopping to render life-saving aid or contacting 911, the motorist immediately fled the area, leaving the severely injured rider behind.
