With the Florida High School Athletic Association athletic calendar underway and Kickoff Classic preseason games in the books, the unmistakable sights and sounds of Friday Night Lights are back in full force across Indian River County and the surrounding region. As teams gear up for the regular season, local attention is shifting toward the defensive side of the ball, where an elite crop of secondary defenders is poised to make game-changing impacts.
The 2026 high school football season on the Treasure Coast is defined by a formidable lineup of defensive backs, featuring highly recruited athletes from Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, and Jensen Beach who boast impressive collegiate offers and state-championship-level experience.
Nowhere is this defensive talent more concentrated than at Vero Beach High School, which boasts a staggering lineup of defensive backs ready to dominate the 2026 campaign. The program has developed and attracted top-tier talent, creating what may be the most feared secondary in the region.
- Jamarion Hillsman (Junior, Vero Beach): A current three-star prospect holding 11 collegiate offers from programs like Florida, Florida State, Purdue, and Baylor. Hillsman is cemented in Vero Beach lore for breaking up a game-winning two-point conversion against Miami Palmetto during last year’s double-overtime state championship run. He is the team’s top returning tackler, having logged 65 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 10 passes defended last season.
- Jayden Haywood (Senior, Vero Beach): Entering his third season with the program, the 6-foot-1 track and field star is coming off a stellar junior year where he recorded 50 tackles and 11 passes defended. Haywood currently holds nine college offers.
- Jeromie King (Senior, Vero Beach): After leading the area with six interceptions and securing First Team All-Area honors in 2025 while at Martin County, King transferred to Vero Beach in the offseason. - Jermonty Kimbrough Jr. (Senior, Vero Beach): Adding even more depth to the Vero secondary, Kimbrough Jr. transfers in with a massive 23 collegiate offers. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound safety collected 55 total tackles and 12 passes defended last season at Royal Palm Beach, and now reunites with former head coach Jacob Turay, who has joined the Vero Beach coaching staff.
Beyond Indian River County, neighboring St. Lucie and Martin counties are also fielding remarkable talent in the secondary. Fort Pierce Central features senior Von Adams, who already made waves this preseason with a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown against Port St. Lucie. He is joined by senior teammate Chad DeVries, the top returning tackler for the Cobras after an 80-stop season in 2025. Over at Fort Pierce Westwood, senior Jakeim Ellison serves as the defensive anchor, coming off a season with 63 tackles and an incredible 26 passes defended.
At John Carroll Catholic, the defense is bolstered by junior shutdown cornerback Devon Lewis, who holds an offer from Chowan, and highly touted freshman Caleb Phillips, who enters his first year of high school already holding a major Division I offer from Florida State University after an impressive June camp performance.
Further south, the defending District 13-4A champions, Jensen Beach, feature a dominant senior duo. Jalen Webley, a Gardner-Webb commit, tied for the team lead last year with three interceptions and 20 passes defended. He is paired with 6-foot-3 senior safety Gage Wilson, who also pulled down three interceptions—returning two for touchdowns—and holds offers from Syracuse and Baylor.
