A recent and alarming incident on our local shores serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face to keep the Treasure Coast safe. A federal grand jury has formally indicted a 72-year-old Colorado man following a violent confrontation with federal agents right here in Vero Beach.
According to announcements from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, the suspect, Thomas Earl Steffens of Grand Junction, Colorado, was fleeing an active arrest warrant in his home state. Court records indicate Steffens traveled by bus down to Vero Beach, where he was eventually tracked down by members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force on March 2.
As deputy U.S. marshals on the Fugitive Task Force moved to execute the arrest, the suspect allegedly opened fire, striking one deputy in the chest and leg before officers returned fire and took him into custody.
Following the harrowing shootout, Steffens is now facing severe legal consequences. His formal federal indictment includes the following charges:
- Five counts of attempted murder of a federal officer
- Five counts of aggravated assault of a federal officer
- One count of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence
If convicted on these severe charges, Steffens faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison. The ongoing case highlights the vital collaboration between national and local agencies.
