Piper Aircraft Soars in Vero Beach with Record Sales and a Decade of Job Stability
As the largest manufacturer in Indian River County, Piper Aircraft stands as a pillar of the Treasure Coast economy. After navigating contentious periods of heavy layoffs in the early 2000s, the Vero Beach-based airplane builder has completely reversed its trajectory. Today, the company is celebrating over a decade without a single layoff, actively investing in its 1,500-strong workforce, and expanding its local industrial footprint.
The aviation giant recently reported back-to-back years of its highest sales in recent history, successfully building and selling 291 aircraft in both 2024 and 2025. A significant contributor to this success is the company’s flagship model, the luxury turboprop-powered M700 Fury. Retailing for up to $4.5 million, Piper impressively sold 47 of these high-end aircraft last year alone. With the highly technical manufacturing process taking four to six months to build a plane from scratch, precision and dedicated local labor remain central to the company’s thriving operations.
To retain its highly skilled workforce in Vero Beach, Piper Aircraft is pouring its recent profits back into generous employee amenities. Executives clearly understand that maintaining an active, uninterrupted production line requires a well-cared-for team. CEO John Calcagno emphasized that these costly, high-quality facilities are an investment in treating employees like family. Recent additions to the corporate campus include:
- A brand-new dining hall that opened its doors to staff this past June.
- A fully equipped, on-site employee gymnasium.
- An exclusive primary care clinic offering completely free healthcare services to employees.
Piper Aircraft’s remarkable transformation—from a company that suffered massive job purges leading up to 2015, into Indian River County’s most stable manufacturing powerhouse—is a direct result of strong ownership, strategic business diversification, and significant investments in local worker wellbeing.
Beyond enhancing the daily life of its employees, Piper is actively diversifying its revenue streams. The company has expanded its aircraft service center and launched a new subsidiary known as PIMCO, which specializes in providing advanced manufacturing services to other businesses. This strategic corporate expansion has been financially stabilized by the sovereign wealth fund of Brunei, which purchased the company in 2009 and is praised by local leadership as a highly supportive shareholder.
The manufacturer has also proven incredibly resilient in the face of international trade challenges. When recent tariff escalations between the United States and Canada threatened to increase the cost of essential aircraft engines, Piper successfully secured a critical exemption. While early rhetoric suggested local jobs might be in jeopardy due to the supply chain disruptions, Calcagno later clarified that employment was never truly at risk, only the timely delivery of the aircraft.
Looking ahead, Piper spokesperson Kathleen Pagani noted that the company is closely monitoring supply chains but does not anticipate current tariff actions to disrupt Vero Beach production. Instead, Piper Aircraft is focusing its sights on the future of aviation. By investing in new machinery and cutting-edge research and development—including the exciting, albeit early-stage, exploration of electric planes—this Treasure Coast manufacturing powerhouse is ensuring it continues to fly high for decades to come.
