A 25-year-old Vero Beach resident is facing severe charges following a hit-and-run collision that claimed the life of a local e-bike rider. Following a nearly month-long investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol, Michael Steigerwald was taken into custody and charged with failing to stop or remain at a crash involving death.
The arrest follows a fatal August collision on Eighth Street in Vero Beach, where a pickup truck driver struck an e-bike and fled the scene, resulting in the tragic death of 48-year-old Steven Edward Poteat. Crucial community tips and local traffic camera technology ultimately led law enforcement to the suspect’s vehicle.
The incident unfolded just before 9:00 p.m. on August 9. The victim, Steven Edward Poteat of Vero Beach, was riding his e-bike westbound on Eighth Street, nearing the 14th Avenue intersection. According to Florida Highway Patrol representatives, a pickup truck approached the e-bike from behind and attempted an evasive maneuver toward the southwest. The vehicle partially crossed into the eastbound lane, but the driver was unable to avoid the e-bike. The right side of the truck struck Poteat, throwing him onto the roadway where he came to rest in the eastbound lane of Eighth Street.
Instead of stopping to render aid or contact law enforcement, the driver fled the scene. Good Samaritans traveling eastbound witnessed a white pickup truck swerve into their lane before correcting back into the westbound lane and speeding away. These witnesses discovered the debris and the victim in the roadway, remaining by Poteat’s side to provide assistance until first responders arrived. Poteat was subsequently airlifted to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, where he was tragically pronounced dead.

- On August 12, law enforcement located the damaged pickup truck behind a residence in south Vero Beach. The vehicle was towed to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services Building for thorough evidence processing.
On September 3, authorities officially served an arrest warrant at Steigerwald’s last known address in south Vero Beach. Steigerwald remains booked in the Indian River County Jail under a $500,000 bail.
