A prompt response from local authorities in Sebastian ensured community safety this Tuesday evening, October 28, 2025, after a device initially reported as suspicious was safely investigated and determined to be harmless. The incident, which unfolded near the scenic North Sebastian Conservation Area trail, highlighted the swift and professional coordination between the Sebastian Police Department and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad Unit.

The alarm was first raised around 4:12 p.m. when reports of a suspicious package surfaced near the junction of Main Street and Powerline Road, an area situated conveniently west of U.S. 1 and not far from the local USPS post office. Deputy Chief Tim Wood of the Sebastian Police Department noted, “It was out in the open by the sign. We observed the device, saw it could potentially be an explosive and called the (bomb technicians).”

Given the potential threat, Sebastian police promptly secured the area and requested specialized assistance from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad Unit. These highly trained technicians quickly mobilized to the scene, bringing their expertise and equipment to thoroughly assess the situation. Roadways in the immediate vicinity were briefly blocked as a precautionary measure, ensuring the safety of residents and passersby in this bustling part of Indian River County.

Upon examination, what was initially feared to be a pipe bomb was thankfully identified as a plastic PVC pipe wrapped in tape—a common item used as a geocaching container. Geocaching, a popular outdoor treasure hunting game, involves participants using GPS coordinates to find hidden containers, often referred to as “geocaches,” at specific locations. This harmless revelation was confirmed by Tod Goodyear, a spokesperson for the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, who succinctly stated, “It was harmless.”

The prompt and meticulous response by law enforcement ensured that the situation was de-escalated quickly and efficiently. By approximately 7 p.m., deputies had cleared the area, and all roadways were reopened to normal traffic flow. The incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the proper protocol when encountering anything out of the ordinary.

“If you see a suspicious device, do not touch it,” advised Deputy Chief Tim Wood. “Call the police non-emergency number.”

This incident underscores the dedication of our local police force and their readiness to act in conjunction with regional specialized units to protect the peace of our community. Residents of Sebastian and the broader Vero Beach area can rest assured that their safety remains a top priority, with well-drilled emergency protocols in place to handle unexpected situations with professionalism and care. The swift resolution in Sebastian is a testament to the effective emergency services upholding the tranquil lifestyle that makes Vero Beach, Florida and its surrounding areas so desirable.
