The cultural heart of Vero Beach was recently transformed into the Great White Way as the Friends Committee of Riverside Theatre hosted its highly anticipated Broadway Night Spring Gala. Serving as the theater’s most significant fundraising event of the season, the star-studded evening brought an unforgettable infusion of stage and screen magic to the local community.

Co-chaired by Marcy DeWolfe and Paula Shorts, the meticulously planned affair offered patrons a genuine star treatment. Elegantly attired guests arrived at the iconic venue, mingling outdoors over premium cocktails before making their way into the renowned Stark Stage main auditorium for the main event.

Before the performers took the stage, attendees were warmly welcomed by Cindy Rounsavall, chair of the Executive Friends Committee, alongside Wheatie Gibb, and Riverside’s executive producer and CEO, Jon Moses. The leadership team took a moment to express their profound gratitude to the patrons, emphasizing the vital importance of the gala’s proceeds.

The annual event raises critical funds for the theater, assuring its ability to provide exceptional theatrical experiences and enabling Performing Arts programs that foster growth, creativity, and collaboration in students of all ages.

The evening’s headline entertainment featured Tony Award-winning powerhouse Stephanie J. Block and the highly accomplished Sebastian Arcelus. The dynamic duo captivated the Vero Beach audience with an intimate blend of powerful vocal performances and personal storytelling. Interspersed among their musical numbers, the couple shared charming anecdotes from their shared theatrical history:

  • Meeting while on tour for the smash-hit musical Wicked, where they famously fell in love under the Florida skies.
  • Secretly marrying at New York’s City Hall while performing Wicked on Broadway, remarkably completing their evening performance without anyone knowing they were officially husband and wife.
  • Starring together as a married couple in the acclaimed 2022 Broadway revival of Into the Woods, a production they later toured alongside their daughter and the full Broadway cast.

To conclude the musical portion of the evening, Block serenaded the audience with a heartfelt rendition of Nancy LaMott’s beautiful song, We Can Be Kind. She left the theatergoers with an inspiring and timely reminder that kindness is something everyone can and should practice.

Following the spectacular performance, the celebration transitioned into a culinary and visual delight. Guests were treated to an exquisite repast masterfully prepared by Elizabeth D. Kennedy & Co. Catering. The venue’s aesthetic matched the grandeur of the performances, featuring Broadway Nightclub-style tables draped in multicolored linens and adorned with vibrant floral arrangements throughout the Orchid Lobby and the upper Founders Lounge.

To cap off the night, many attendees made their way to the Riverside Lounge located within the Waxlax Stage. The space was ingeniously redesigned for the gala as a cozy, colorful oasis, complete with comfortable couches where patrons could lounge, feast, and reflect on a spectacular night dedicated to supporting the premier performing arts destination of Vero Beach.
