A high-stakes manhunt for a fugitive doctor accused of violent crimes in Colorado came to a dramatic conclusion in Vero Beach on Monday, resulting in a shootout on local streets involving U.S. Marshals and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. Thomas Steffens, a 72-year-old former neurosurgeon, was taken into custody after opening fire on law enforcement officers during a traffic stop.
The incident began when a joint task force, including local deputies and federal agents, tracked Steffens to Indian River County. Authorities had been alerted that the suspect was traveling through the Treasure Coast and was considered armed and dangerous. The situation escalated quickly when officers pulled over the vehicle in which Steffens was traveling as a passenger.
According to law enforcement officials, Steffens had previously stated that “he would not be taken into custody alive” and acted on that threat during the encounter.
Reports indicate that while the driver of the vehicle exited safely, Steffens refused to get out. He subsequently opened fire on the five officers present at the scene. Law enforcement returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. During the exchange, a U.S. Marshal was shot in the leg. Both the Marshal and the suspect were transported to the hospital; Steffens is expected to survive his injuries.
Charges and Background
Steffens is now facing significant charges in Florida, including attempted murder of law enforcement officers, stemming from the Vero Beach gunfight. These charges are in addition to the warrant issued out of Grand Junction, Colorado, where he is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in late January.
Before fleeing the state of Colorado, Steffens worked for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. His capture in Vero Beach marks the end of a multi-state search, highlighting the critical role of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office in assisting federal partners to apprehend dangerous fugitives within the community.
