World-class athletic competition has returned to the Treasure Coast this week as the Vero Beach International Tennis Open celebrates its fifth anniversary at the Grand Harbor Golf & Beach Club. Running now through February 1, this prestigious tournament is a highlight of the local sporting calendar, drawing professional women’s tennis players from more than 30 countries to Indian River County.

As part of the U.S. Women’s Tennis Association Pro Circuit, the event offers a $75,000 prize purse and critical WTA ranking points. It is a rare opportunity for local residents to witness high-level tennis right in their backyard; the tournament is one of only 10 events of this caliber held nationwide. The level of talent is significant, with more than 30 current and past participants having gone on to compete in the U.S. Open.

Marco Osorio, the director of sports and tournament director, emphasized the community impact of the event:

“The VBITO has become one of the most anticipated weeks of the year at Grand Harbor. Each year, we see an incredible level of competition and community energy. It’s amazing to see professional players from around the world competing right here in our backyard.”

Matches are scheduled to begin daily at 11 a.m., with the final matches of the day taking place at 5:30 p.m. While the Grand Harbor Golf & Beach Club is a private facility, the tournament invites the general public to attend the matches and participate in a robust schedule of social events throughout the week.
