Residents of Vero Beach, Florida, are currently on high alert following a tragic double homicide that unfolded near the Vero Beach main library. The Vero Beach Police Department is actively searching for a suspect involved in what authorities are describing as a calculated crime of passion. With the suspect still at large, local law enforcement is urging the Treasure Coast community to remain vigilant.
The disturbing sequence of events began on a quiet Tuesday morning. At approximately 7 a.m., Vero Beach police officers responded to reports of gunfire in a parking lot adjacent to the library. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a man and a woman who had sustained multiple fatal gunshot wounds.
Investigators quickly turned to surveillance footage to piece together the timeline of the tragedy. The video reportedly shows a man backing a Ford Ranger into a parking space. Shortly after, the female victim arrived in an SUV, parked, and entered the passenger side of the Ford Ranger. Moments later, the suspect approached the driver’s side of the truck and discharged his weapon multiple times into the vehicle. The chilling footage then shows the shooter moving to the passenger side to open fire once again.
Vero Beach Police Chief David Currey addressed the ongoing investigation, identifying the primary person of interest as Jesse Ellis. According to Chief Currey, Ellis and the female victim, who was his wife, were in the process of a separation or divorce. Seeking answers about his estranged wife’s daily activities, Ellis allegedly hired a professional service to investigate. It was through this private service that he discovered she was meeting a married man at the library, a location they had reportedly utilized for previous meetings.
This was a crime of passion. Two individuals who were apparently seeing each other for a period of time. One husband being upset about it and, potentially, maybe this crime was committed.
In a bizarre twist to the local investigation, the suspect may have attempted a daring escape into the ocean. Shortly after the library shooting, Indian River County fire department officials received a call from a witness reporting a fully clothed man swimming approximately 900 yards offshore.
First responders quickly launched a marine vessel from the beach to check on the swimmer’s welfare. Upon making contact in the water, the crew determined the man was physically safe. He declined their offer for a ride back to shore, continued swimming away, and provided responders with a false name. It was only later, as the homicide investigation rapidly developed back on the mainland, that authorities realized the man in the water closely matched the physical description of Jesse Ellis. Furthermore, investigators located Ellis’s truck abandoned nearby at the beach.
Chief Currey acknowledged the highly unusual circumstances surrounding the suspect’s potential whereabouts, noting that while it is possible the suspect drowned in the Atlantic, he could have just as easily returned to the shore undetected. The police chief has vowed to keep searching until Ellis is apprehended.
The Vero Beach Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment to community safety. Due to the violent nature of the crime, authorities warn that the suspect may still be armed and should be considered highly dangerous. Local authorities are asking residents and visitors in the immediate area to prioritize safety and report any suspicious activities.
