As the August 18 primary election approaches, voters across the Treasure Coast, including right here in Indian River County, are gearing up to cast their ballots. Early voting officially kicks off on Saturday, August 8, offering residents a convenient and flexible way to participate in the democratic process before the traditional Election Day rush.
Early voting for Florida’s August 18 primary election begins Saturday, August 8, giving voters in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties a chance to cast their ballots before Election Day.
For residents in Indian River County, the early voting period runs from August 8 through Saturday, August 15. One of the greatest benefits of early voting is the flexibility it provides. Unlike Election Day, where residents are required to report to a specific assigned precinct, voters taking advantage of early voting can cast their ballots at any designated early-voting location within their registered county. Residents are encouraged to visit the Indian River County Supervisor of Elections website to verify specific operating hours and find the nearest polling site.
The schedule remains consistent for our neighbors across the wider Treasure Coast. Martin, St. Lucie, and Okeechobee counties are also hosting early voting from August 8 through August 15. In Martin County, polling sites such as the Elections Center in Stuart, the Elisabeth Lahti Library in Indiantown, and the Hobe Sound Library will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Just south of the Treasure Coast, Palm Beach County is extending its early voting window by one day, keeping polls open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. through Sunday, August 16.
Whether you are a first-time voter or a seasoned participant, it is critical to arrive at the polls prepared. Florida voters casting a ballot in person must bring a valid form of identification that includes both a photograph and a signature.
Acceptable forms of identification include:
- A Florida driver’s license
- A Florida identification card
- A U.S. passport
- Military identification
If your primary photo ID does not include a signature, you will be required to present a second accepted form of ID that contains one. Voters who arrive without the necessary identification will still be permitted to vote, but they must cast a provisional ballot.
Because Florida is a closed-primary state, voters can generally only vote for partisan candidates aligned with their registered political party. However, nonpartisan contests are open to all registered voters regardless of party affiliation, meaning every ballot holds weight in shaping our local communities.
For those utilizing vote-by-mail, the deadline to request a ballot has officially passed. If you are holding onto a mail-in ballot, do not rely on last-minute postal delivery. Florida law mandates that mail-in ballots must be physically received by the Supervisor of Elections—not merely postmarked—by the applicable Election Day deadline. To guarantee your vote is counted, consider dropping it off at a secure ballot intake station located at designated county facilities.
If you miss the early voting window, Election Day is set for Tuesday, August 18. Polls will be open statewide from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., but remember that on Election Day, you must cast your vote strictly at your assigned local precinct.
