A sudden neighborhood disruption in the Treasure Coast has left one dog injured and a local investigation underway. A Fort Pierce man discharged a handgun, striking a dog after it allegedly charged at him and his wife outside their home in the Indian River Estates community.

A routine arrival at home escalated into a shooting on Sunday when two loose dogs cornered a woman in her vehicle, prompting her husband to intervene with a firearm to stop an aggressive charge.

According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, the unsettling event took place in the 5900 block of Palm Drive. A woman had just pulled her vehicle into her driveway when two roaming dogs approached her car. The animals blocked her path, preventing her from safely stepping out of the vehicle. Fearing for her safety, she remained inside the car and called her husband for help.

The husband initially stepped outside, saw the dogs, and quickly went back inside his home to retrieve a handgun. When he emerged the second time, one of the dogs aggressively charged toward him. Before the animal could bite him, the man fired his weapon and struck the dog.

Immediately following the gunshot, both dogs fled the property and ran to their home located nearby on Myrtle Drive. The dogs’ owner subsequently transported the injured animal to a local emergency veterinary hospital for treatment. The current medical condition of the dog has not been disclosed.

Law enforcement is taking the incident seriously and piecing together the exact timeline of the confrontation. As part of their active inquiry, deputies are currently:

  • Reviewing neighborhood surveillance video to confirm the events in the driveway.
  • Interviewing independent witnesses to gather unbiased accounts.
  • Collecting additional scene evidence to ensure a comprehensive report.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that the investigation is strictly ongoing. Authorities noted that no final conclusions will be drawn until every piece of available evidence has been carefully reviewed.
