The Fort Pierce Police Department has successfully apprehended a suspect in connection with a distressing hit-and-run incident that left a young child severely injured earlier this month on the Treasure Coast.
On Wednesday, August 12, authorities confirmed the arrest of 34-year-old Demetris Johnson. According to investigators, Johnson was taken into custody at 2905 U.S. Highway 1 and now faces multiple offenses. His charges include leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury and driving while his license was suspended.
The collision occurred on the evening of August 1, at approximately 8:55 p.m. Police report that two children were navigating the roadway within a marked crosswalk at the intersection of North 25th Street and Avenue M in Fort Pierce when Johnson’s vehicle struck one of the children.
Surveillance video obtained from a nearby business captured the crash and shows Johnson exiting his vehicle to check on the children before returning to his vehicle and fleeing the scene.
Thanks to the diligent efforts of responding officers and local investigators, the suspect’s vehicle and identity were rapidly confirmed using law enforcement databases and available investigative technology.
In a positive update for the local community, police confirmed that the 7-year-old victim has been discharged from the hospital and is currently recovering.
