The Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA) is partnering with the Vero Beach Opera to present an insightful cultural afternoon dedicated to one of Giacomo Puccini’s most intriguing works. On Sunday, May 17, the museum will welcome Ian Campbell, the Vero Beach Opera’s Master of Ceremonies, for a special presentation on Girl of the Golden West.

The discussion is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in the Museum’s Leonhardt Auditorium. Campbell will guide attendees through the opera’s libretto and its rich historical context, which is set against the backdrop of the California Gold Rush of 1849. The narrative follows miners who traveled from all corners of the globe to America in search of fortune.

Campbell will also highlight the unique position this work holds in operatic history. Premiering at the Metropolitan Opera in 1910, Girl of the Golden West initially confused critics and audiences because it deviated from the familiar structures of Puccini’s earlier hits, such as Madama Butterfly and Tosca.

“Is it the first spaghetti western, an American opera, an Italian opera set in America, or a story of love, hope, and moral redemption? I look forward to exploring these themes and the impact of the Girl on May 17th.”
