Families in Vero Beach and throughout Indian River County should prepare for a slight adjustment to their daily routines beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year. Following a unanimous vote by the School Board this past Monday, the School District of Indian River County has officially approved a new bell schedule that shifts start and dismissal times slightly later for most students.

The changes, which are set to take effect this coming August, are the result of a comprehensive review process involving transportation analysis, operational studies, and significant community feedback. District officials have stated that the primary goals of this shift are to improve student learning conditions, increase the efficiency of the transportation system, and better accommodate the needs of local families and staff.

New Bell Schedule for the 2026-2027 School Year:

  • High Schools: 7:20 a.m. to 2:07 p.m. (Moving 15 minutes later)
  • Middle and K-8 Schools: 8:10 a.m. to 2:51 p.m. (Moving 10 minutes later)
  • Elementary Schools: 9:00 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. (Moving 10 minutes later)

It is important to note that Wabasso School and Indian River PREP will not be affected by these changes and will maintain their current, independent schedules.

While the changes are relatively modest—high schools currently begin at 7:05 a.m.—the shift is seen as a strategic move to prioritize student health while maintaining the logistics required for after-school activities. Leaders described the decision as a “balanced step” intended to provide students with crucial extra rest in the morning without disrupting the dismissal times needed for students who work or participate in sports.

The decision came after a lengthy review process that included an analysis of transportation models, an operational analysis and two rounds of community input. The proposals received broad support in responding to district surveys from families and staff across grades.

The community’s response played a vital role in finalizing this decision. During the survey process, the district received significant support from residents. Among families who responded, 261 were “very supportive” and 171 were “supportive” of the changes. Similarly, staff members showed strong approval, with nearly 200 employees expressing support.

Residents who favored the change highlighted several key advantages, including more uniform schedules across different grade levels and dismissal times that align more effectively with after-school jobs and extracurriculars. Additionally, the district anticipates that these adjustments will streamline bus routing, potentially reducing delays and improving transport reliability across the county.

As the district moves forward with this implementation for next August, officials have expressed gratitude to the parents, employees, and community members who participated in the planning process, ensuring the new schedule serves the best interests of Indian River County students.
