The pressures of competitive youth sports were temporarily set aside in Vero Beach, Florida, as players participating in the Softball RBI World Series shifted their focus from the diamond to their own mental well-being. Hosted by MLB Together, the annual mental wellness event provided visiting young athletes with essential tools to slow down, connect with their peers, and prioritize self-care in a high-stakes tournament environment.

Taking place in and around the historic Building 42 in Vero Beach, the initiative went beyond personal mental health. It also emphasized community service, integrating with a broader national campaign to complete 250,000 hours of volunteer work in honor of America’s 250th birthday.

Participants engaged in several hands-on activities designed to foster community connection and personal mindfulness:

  • Community Giveback: Players assembled care bags specifically destined for local Boys and Girls Clubs, leaving a positive, tangible mark on the surrounding youth community.
  • Animal Therapy: A fenced-in petting zoo, provided and tended to by Vero Beach locals, offered players a grounding, stress-free interaction with nature right outside the facility.
  • Mindfulness Exercises: The Fill Your Cup activity encouraged athletes to use sticky notes to write down what brings them joy and fulfillment, reinforcing the concept that one cannot pour from an empty cup.

The animal therapy was a standout success among the visiting athletes. Vero Beach community members brought a variety of animals, including a baby duck and a baby goat named Joy, which quickly drew the affection of the players. Kaiya Jones, a second baseman for the Nike RBI Tigers, connected with the goat, playfully noting her own aspirations to be the greatest of all time. Teammates Gianne Douangphouxai and Nalani San Nicolas of the Softball Beyond Borders team praised the calming presence of the animals, noting that such experiences gracefully disconnect players from their screens and the immediate stress of the competition.

Optimal performance on the field begins with foundational self-care. By teaching young athletes how to manage stress and support one another, the MLB Together event in Vero Beach aims to build stronger, healthier individuals for the future.

Sports psychologist Jorge Aguilar emphasized the importance of introducing these coping mechanisms early in a player’s career. According to Aguilar, the mental wellness skills required to navigate hurdles at the Major League level are just as crucial for youth players. The Vero Beach event served as a safe space for athletes to realize that prioritizing physical, spiritual, and mental health is paramount to long-term success. Most importantly, the sessions reinforced that struggling is a universal human experience and that seeking help from a coach, counselor, or teacher is a sign of immense strength.

As the Softball RBI World Series continues, the young competitors will carry these vital lessons back onto the field. The collaboration between MLB Together and the Vero Beach community not only enriched the lives of the visiting players but also provided a meaningful contribution to local youth programs, proving that being a great player ultimately stems from being a well-rounded, supported person.
