VERO BEACH, FL — The Vero Beach High School Fighting Indians secured a hard-fought 45-30 victory over a resilient Delray Beach Atlantic squad on Friday, August 28, at Billy Livings Field at the Citrus Bowl. Fueled by a dynamic offensive performance and an explosive first half, Vero Beach improved their season record to 2-0, showcasing exactly why they are currently ranked 14th in the state and second in Class 6A according to MaxPreps.
Senior running back Marc Johns stepped into an expanded role with fellow back Jayden Lockhart sidelined, proving more than ready for the challenge. A former slot receiver who transferred from St. Lucie West Centennial High, Johns utilized his speed and shiftiness to navigate the open field. He capped Vero Beach’s opening 78-yard drive with a resilient 22-yard touchdown run and later caught a 29-yard touchdown pass on a wheel route in the second quarter. Johns finished the evening with 10 carries for 88 yards and five receptions for 59 yards, contributing heavily to the team’s early momentum.
“The transition, it was actually easy. Coach J would help me with the plays. It went very well,” Johns noted regarding his move to Vero Beach. “The program is better. There’s more competition and more exposure.”
Under center, Notre Dame commit Champ Monds orchestrated the offense brilliantly. For the second consecutive week, the star quarterback threw three touchdown passes and rushed for two more. Monds completed an incredibly efficient 21 of 26 passes for 380 yards while adding 44 rushing yards on six carries.
The passing game was heavily supported by two standout receivers who each eclipsed the 100-yard mark in a single quarter:
- Marcus Melbourne: Hauled in five passes for 151 yards, including 111 yards in the second quarter alone. Melbourne caught two touchdown passes of 45 and 25 yards within a lightning-fast 23-second span right before halftime, capitalizing on a fumble recovery by teammate Jamarion Hillsman.
- Latravious Woods: Caught eight passes for 145 yards, highlighted by a staggering 92-yard touchdown reception from Monds in the third quarter that pushed the local lead to a commanding 45-14.
Despite facing a massive 31-point deficit midway through the third quarter, the visiting Eagles refused to surrender. Atlantic rallied behind quarterback Nicholas Pouncey and running back Kendrick Hughes, recovering an onside kick and pushing across two scores to narrow the gap to 45-30 early in the fourth quarter.
The Vero Beach defense ultimately sealed the victory. Following early tackles for loss by Alex Guzman, Tristan Davis, Kaden Huggins, and Deion Jackson, the secondary stepped up when it mattered most. Jackson grabbed an interception off a tipped pass from Jeromie King, while Jermonty Kimbrough and Jayden Haywood added crucial fourth-quarter picks to ice the game and halt Atlantic’s comeback attempt.
Vero Beach head coach Lenny Jankowski acknowledged the physical toll of the matchup, noting that the team would need to recover from some bumps and bruises before their next major test. Both teams were hampered by frequent penalties throughout the night, an area Jankowski emphasized the team will continue to work on cleaning up.
Looking ahead, the schedule offers no rest for Vero Beach. Next week, nationally ranked St. Frances Academy, traveling from Baltimore, will arrive at Livings Field for a highly anticipated showdown. Boasting multiple four- and five-star recruits, St. Frances is widely considered one of the top high school football programs in the country, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most thrilling matchups on the Treasure Coast this season.
