Local football fans got an early look at what to expect as Master’s Academy of Vero Beach hosted Okeechobee High School for an action-packed preseason scrimmage on Friday. In a hard-fought matchup that provided valuable tape for both coaching staffs, the visiting Brahmans mounted a second-half comeback to defeat the Patriots 14-10.
The preseason scrimmage offered crucial real-game experience, allowing Master’s Academy to evaluate its young roster and Okeechobee to test its up-tempo offense ahead of the fast-approaching regular season.
The scrimmage was carefully structured to ease players back into game speed. The teams played standard 12-minute quarters during the first half, before shifting to a 10-minute running clock in the third and fourth quarters. Special teams situations were also practiced, utilizing a strict no-blocking rule on kickoffs and goal attempts to prioritize player safety while still evaluating execution.
Despite a tipped-ball interception on the very first play of the game, Master’s Academy demonstrated significant poise. The Patriots quickly rebounded on defense, forcing a four-and-out before piecing together a nine-play scoring drive of their own. Freshman quarterback Jackson Fromag found sophomore Banks Swearingen for a 19-yard touchdown strike. Moments later, after Swearingen snagged an interception on defense, senior Burt Lockhart extended the Patriots’ lead to 10-0 with a 25-yard field goal.
Master’s Academy head coach Stephen Boyer expressed pride in his young team’s early maturity and emphasized how vital the live action was for their overall preparation and conditioning.
However, the second half belonged entirely to Okeechobee. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Antwan Blatch, the Brahmans shifted gears, leaning heavily into an up-tempo rushing attack that wore down the Master’s Academy defense.
