In a heartwarming display of community support, the team at Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital in Indian River County recently dedicated their time to assist local heroes in need. As part of their annual Day of Giving on April 7, 2026, hospital staff members and volunteers gathered on the Treasure Coast to assemble 500 specialized care kits designed specifically for Florida veterans experiencing homelessness.

These care packages were thoughtfully packed with essential daily items, non-perishable food supplies, and handwritten notes of encouragement from the hospital’s volunteers. To ensure these vital resources reach the individuals who need them most, the assembled kits are being distributed in direct partnership with the National Homeless Veterans Support Group.

The philanthropic initiative carries a deeply personal meaning for the hospital’s leadership. Dan Bowen, the President of Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital and a proud Air Force veteran, emphasized the crucial role of proactive community outreach when connecting with former service members.

“Outreach is important for our veterans, very prideful like we all are. If we go out personally and give them the support, hopefully they’ll take the next step and seek out the help they need.”

While Florida has made significant strides in veteran welfare, ongoing local support remains a necessity. According to data from the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, there are currently around 2,500 homeless veterans residing in the state. Although this number represents a commendable 70 percent decrease over the past 15 years, grassroots initiatives in the immediate Vero Beach and Sebastian areas serve as a critical safety net for those who have served our country.
