INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A fatal single-vehicle accident on Interstate 95 claimed the life of a 61-year-old Palm Bay man late Friday afternoon, leading to a multi-hour closure of northbound lanes as local authorities responded to the scene.

The crash occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. near mile marker 157, located just north of the County Road 512 interchange. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was traveling northbound in the center lane driving a 2000 red Ford Ranger. Troopers report that for unknown reasons, the pickup truck veered to the left, leaving the roadway and overturning in the grassy median. The force of the crash caused the driver to be ejected from the vehicle.

Witnesses in the area attempted to intervene immediately following the wreck. Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that bystanders initiated CPR before deputies arrived to take over life-saving measures. However, the driver’s condition was already dire when paramedics reached the site.

“The patient was in cardiac arrest upon our arrival,” said Steve Greer, Assistant Fire Chief with Indian River County Fire Rescue.

Emergency responders transported the driver by ambulance to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where he was later pronounced dead.

The investigation and cleanup required significant traffic control measures. Officials blocked all northbound lanes on I-95 for an extended period Friday evening to allow troopers to document the scene and clear the wreckage. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that all lanes were reopened to traffic by Saturday. The cause of the vehicle’s departure from the lane remains under active investigation.
