The intersection of high finance and high fashion took center stage in Vero Beach recently, as the Schwab Vogue Affair brought community members together for an evening of style, strategy, and philanthropy. Held at the luxurious Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa, the exclusive event served a dual purpose: offering expert financial insights while raising critical funds for the Hibiscus Children’s Center.

Hosted by the local Charles Schwab team, the evening began with a warm welcome from Vice President and Branch Manager Glenn Smith. He was joined by financial consultant Lola Danza, a former New Yorker who expressed her deep appreciation for the local community. Danza noted that while her career began on Park Avenue, she found her true home in Vero Beach, attributing that feeling to the people who foster thoughtful conversation and shared experiences.

Following cocktails and a silent auction, guests were treated to an elegant three-course dinner. The highlight of the evening’s “strategy” portion was a candid conversation with Liz Ann Sonders, Charles Schwab’s chief investment strategist. A regular on major financial news networks and a perennial figure on Barron’s “100 Most Influential Women in Finance” list, Sonders provided a captivating analysis of the current economic landscape.

Describing the current market as a “temperamental era,” Sonders emphasized the necessity of mastering emotional risk tolerance to avoid reactive decision-making.

“We either let our winners run, or we chase them. We panic out of our losers; we get completely out of whack when the inevitable reversion to the mean happens.”

Sonders used the analogy of a jigsaw puzzle to illustrate the importance of maintaining investment discipline, noting that one cannot complete the puzzle without looking at the picture on the box—which represents the investor’s financial plan.

Transitioning from strategy to style, the event featured a curated runway show highlighting trends from four premier local boutiques:

  • Sara Campbell
  • Monkee’s of Vero Beach
  • Sigrid’s of Vero
  • Cooper and Co.

Models showcased a variety of stunning looks, weaving together the threads of financial empowerment and charitable giving. The true winner of the night, however, was the Hibiscus Children’s Center.

Funds raised during the affair directly benefit the Hibiscus Children’s Village in Vero Beach. This 40-bed residential campus provides a safe, family-like environment for teenagers ages 12 to 17 who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment. The Village is renowned for its focus on long-term recovery, offering trauma-informed mental health services, medical care, and programs designed to foster independence.

One such initiative, the Career Pathways to Independence program, equips teens with marketable life skills and arranges internships in fields such as culinary arts and graphic design, ensuring these young adults can successfully transition into adulthood.

The organization continues its fundraising efforts with the Wine and Dine Island Hop at the Grand Harbor Club. For those interested in learning more about the facility or supporting their mission, visit hibiscuschildrenscenter.org.
