The City of Sebastian continues to set a green example for Indian River County, having been officially recognized as a 2025 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. This prestigious designation marks the 24th consecutive year the municipality has earned this honor, underscoring a long-term commitment to urban forestry and environmental maintenance.

In addition to the standard designation, city officials announced that Sebastian also received a Growth Award. This special commendation is reserved for communities that demonstrate higher levels of tree care and creativity within their environmental programs, specifically highlighting expanded urban forestry initiatives over the past year.

Sebastian Mayor Fred Jones emphasized the cultural and ecological importance of the city’s canopy in light of the award.

“Trees are the very lifeblood of our city and play an integral role in our local culture and vibrant ecosystems.”

The Tree City USA program, which is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. To achieve this status, Sebastian met four critical standards required by the program:

  • Maintaining a designated tree board or department.
  • Establishing a tree care ordinance.
  • Dedicating an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita.
  • Hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Michelle Saulnier, the vice president of programs at the Arbor Day Foundation, noted that trees act as “critical infrastructure” for modern cities. The Foundation highlights that urban trees provide tangible economic and health benefits to residents. According to the organization, properly managed city trees help combat urban heat islands, reduce stormwater runoff, and improve local air quality.

Furthermore, the presence of a healthy urban canopy is linked to reduced traffic noise, lower energy bills for homeowners due to shade, and increased property values throughout the community.

The Arbor Day Foundation is a global 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has helped plant more than 500 million trees in over 60 countries. Sebastian’s continued recognition places it among a dedicated network of cities committed to building resilience and fostering community health through nature.
