Friends, family, and classmates gathered at Lake Vinca Park in Sebastian to celebrate the life of 16-year-old Roylynn Scott. The young Vero Beach resident was just days away from beginning her junior year at Vero Beach High School when her life was tragically cut short.
The profound loss stems from a fatal fall at a long-abandoned, unfinished condominium project along the shores of the Indian River Lagoon—a popular local spot where Roylynn and her friends had gathered to enjoy the final days of their summer break. To honor her memory, attendees dressed in vibrant shades of purple, widely known to be Roylynn’s favorite color.
The memorial service painted a deeply moving portrait of a young woman remembered for her boundless kindness, vivacious spirit, and immense love for the natural world.
As the evening began, the weather mirrored the emotional weight of the gathering. Sudden downpours and towering dark clouds initially forced the large crowd to relocate to a nearby family home. However, as the storm softened into a gentle, quiet rain, the overflowing group returned to the lakeside park to stand beneath the oak trees.

Resting on a table were several white, ribbon-tied boxes alongside a vibrant memorial wreath made of red, pink, white, and yellow roses, daisies, and mums. Together, the girls carefully opened the boxes to release dozens of live butterflies into the air. Fly free, Melasi whispered softly as the crowd watched in silent reflection, accompanied only by the soft sound of the falling rain.
To conclude the poignant service, attendees were invited to take a blossom from the floral wreath and release it into the lake’s waters along with a personal prayer or cherished memory.
