Exciting news is on the horizon for residents and travelers across the Treasure Coast. St. Lucie County is officially preparing to expand the footprint of the Treasure Coast International Airport in Fort Pierce, introducing a brand-new hotel to the expansive property. For locals in Vero Beach and surrounding areas, this development marks a significant step in the region’s broader economic and travel-related growth.

As the Treasure Coast continues to attract new residents and visitors, local officials are actively pushing to secure commercial airline services. The planned hotel is a strategic piece of that puzzle. St. Lucie County has announced that they will soon begin accepting proposals from developers to bring this vision to life.

Here is a quick look at the projected timeline for the new hotel development:

  • Request for Proposals (RFP): The county expects to release the formal RFP within the next three months.
  • Review Process: Once developer bids are submitted, the review and approval phase is anticipated to take between six and nine months.
  • Long-Term Vision: The ultimate goal of this infrastructure enhancement is to successfully host the airport’s first commercial flights in the near future.

Finding the perfect location for the hotel on the airport grounds is currently the county’s primary focus. Because much of the airfield receives funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), specific zones must be strictly preserved for aviation-related purposes. Fortunately, the sheer size of the property offers substantial flexibility.

“We have to make sure it’s in the right location. The airport there, certain parts of the airfield which are, you know, we’re funded by the FAA, and that has to be used for aviation purposes only. But then, you know, there is close to 4,000 acres out there at our international airport, so we have plenty of room to develop.” — Erick Gill, St. Lucie County Spokesperson

While the hotel project is steadily moving forward, the broader push for commercial flights has encountered some temporary turbulence. Discussions with several commercial airlines have been placed on hold. According to county officials, the recent government shutdown has severely impacted the regulatory progress and approval processes required at the federal level to finalize these new aviation service agreements.

Despite these regulatory delays, the addition of a hotel to the Treasure Coast International Airport signals strong future potential for our local economy. For Vero Beach and Indian River County residents, a fully operational commercial airport just a short drive south would provide an incredible alternative to the longer commutes down to West Palm Beach or up to Orlando.

We will continue to monitor the county’s progress on the RFP and any updates regarding commercial airline partnerships that could soon transform how the Treasure Coast travels.
