The vibrant courts at Dick Bird Park in Vero Beach were recently filled with the sounds of competitive paddles and community cheers during the Third Annual St. Paddle’s Day Pickleball Tournament. Hosted by the United Way of Indian River County on Saturday, March 7, 2026, the lively event successfully blended local sportsmanship with a powerful philanthropic mission.

While players arrived ready to showcase their pickleball skills, the overarching goal was to support essential local programs. Every point scored, rally extended, and registration fee collected went directly toward the United Way’s ongoing efforts to enhance health, education, and financial stability for families across Indian River County.

The highly anticipated tournament drew an impressive roster of 27 teams, all competing across various skill divisions. The local talent was on full display, culminating in several well-deserved victories. The official division champions included:

  • Mixed Amateur Division: Blake and Owen Bruckner
  • Men’s Advanced Division: Mike Lombardo and Duke Colton
  • Mixed Advanced Division: Will Wilmot and Catherine Oess
  • Women’s Advanced Division: Rachelle Dermody and Tina Clark

Beyond the impressive athletic displays, the tournament featured several heartwarming and memorable community moments. A particularly fun family rivalry unfolded on the courts when Blake and Owen Bruckner squared off against their father, Nate Bruckner, a dedicated staff member of the United Way of Indian River County. Nate was partnered with Curtis Carpenter, who serves on the organization’s Board of Directors, making the match a highly entertaining spectacle for attendees.

Additionally, the tournament welcomed back familiar faces, showcasing the growth and dedication of local players. Bryan Redden and Samuel McCoy, who triumphantly secured first place in the Men’s Fun Division during the previous year’s event, returned to elevate their game. Competing in the highly challenging Men’s Advanced Division this year, the dynamic duo proudly finished in second place.

Reflecting on the success of the day, Meredith Egan, CEO of United Way of Indian River County, praised the collective local effort:

This tournament highlights the incredible spirit and generosity of our community. From players and volunteers to our sponsors, everyone came together to make a meaningful impact while enjoying a day of fun and connection.

The successful execution of this philanthropic sporting event relied heavily on a robust network of local business support. Presenting Sponsor Publix Super Market and Award Sponsor Bread & Butter Pickleball led the community backing. Ace Sponsors included Schlitt Services and Complete Trust Insurance. The individual courts were generously sponsored by the Law Offices of Jennifer D. Peshke, Level Accounting, Vero Beach Social Media, and DogWatch Hidden Fence. Furthermore, valuable in-kind contributions from The Sunshine Pickle Co. and Imperial Imprinting added a special touch to the day’s festivities.

Dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring a welcoming and highly organized experience for both the active participants and the cheering spectators. Their efforts, combined with the community’s generous participation, directly fund the United Way of Indian River County’s vital mission to provide resources for individuals in crisis and create lasting local solutions.

Residents looking to learn more about the United Way’s ongoing initiatives across the Treasure Coast, or those interested in participating in future charitable events, are encouraged to connect with the organization directly to help build a stronger foundation for Vero Beach and beyond.
