The community of Vero Beach is mourning the loss of a beloved local resident, Rodney J. Wilson, who passed away at the age of 77 on March 1, 2026. A familiar and friendly face to many in Indian River County, Rodney deeply embraced the coastal lifestyle that makes Vero Beach such a special place to call home.
Rodney enjoyed living near the beach and sitting on his front porch, having a beer and talking with the neighbors.
A faithful member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach, Rodney spent over four decades contributing to the telecommunications infrastructure across Florida. During his dedicated career, he worked for Southern Bell, BellSouth, and AT&T. Following his well-earned retirement, he fully immersed himself in the Treasure Coast’s renowned outdoor recreation.
Friends and family will fondly remember his passions and community spirit, which included:
- Sharing his profound love of fishing and boating with his children and three grandsons along the beautiful local waterways.
- Fostering a welcoming, tight-knit neighborhood spirit right from his own front porch.
- Proudly serving his country as a member of the National Guard prior to his long corporate career.
Rodney leaves behind a loving legacy. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Emilie Pauline Wilson, their three children—Amy, Rodney T.J., and Lee—and his cherished grandsons, Wilhelm, Emmerich, and RJ.
While Rodney thoroughly relished his retirement years in Vero Beach, Florida, he never lost touch with his Midwestern roots. Originally from Lancaster, Ohio, and raised in New Lexington, he frequently shared fond memories of his hometown.
A funeral Mass and private family burial will take place in his native Ohio in mid-March, with arrangements handled by Roberts-Winegardner Funeral Home. The Vero Beach community extends its deepest sympathies to the Wilson family during this time of remembrance, honoring a man who brought warmth, dedication, and neighborly kindness to the Treasure Coast.
