Residents of Vero Beach are well-acquainted with intense summer thunderstorms, but a recent weather event brought a temporary halt to one of the community’s busiest fast-food destinations. On July 28, the Chick-fil-A located on Elon Lane in Vero Beach was directly struck by lightning, forcing an unexpected daily closure due to immediate equipment issues.

Situated on the south side of State Road 60, just west of 58th Avenue, the bustling restaurant took swift action to ensure public safety. Management quickly confirmed via social media that while vital restaurant equipment was compromised by the electrical surge, all employees and guests remained entirely safe during the incident.

Following the strike, the restaurant remained closed for the remainder of July 28 and experienced a delayed start the following morning. While the location typically begins serving early-bird commuters at 6:30 a.m., operations resumed at 10:30 a.m. on July 29.

For locals eager to support the establishment, the Elon Lane location is back in business, but with a few temporary operational adjustments while the team awaits replacement equipment. Patrons planning a visit should be aware of the following modifications:

  • Digital ordering is paused: Mobile app orders and third-party delivery services are temporarily unavailable.
  • Indoor dining is available: The main dining room is open and welcoming guests.
  • Drive-thru limitations: Only a single drive-thru lane is currently operating.
  • Modified payment process: Drive-thru orders are being taken via headset, and all payments must be collected directly at the window rather than by outdoor attendants.

Despite sustaining a direct lightning strike that damaged operating equipment, the Elon Lane Chick-fil-A ensured the safety of all staff and patrons, successfully reopening its doors to the Vero Beach community less than a day later with modified services.

Local patrons seeking a fully operational drive-thru experience without modifications can also visit the East Vero Beach Chick-fil-A location situated at 1481 U.S. 1, a drive-thru-only establishment that was completely unaffected by the severe weather. According to meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Melbourne, direct lightning strikes to commercial buildings, while startling, are relatively common occurrences during Florida’s highly active summer storm season.
