A historic moment in local sports history is set to take place this week at Vero Beach High School. In a heartfelt tribute to a career defined by excellence and mentorship, the school will officially rename its basketball court in honor of retired, veteran coach Charles “Chuck” Loewendick. The dedication ceremony is scheduled to occur just prior to the tip-off of this Friday night’s game.
For decades, Coach Loewendick was a fixture of Indian River County athletics. During his nearly 30-year tenure, he established himself as the “winningest coach across the Treasure Coast,” securing over 600 career victories. His legacy on the hardwood includes leading the Fighting Indians to numerous district championships and two appearances in the final four. However, as colleagues and former players attest, his impact extends far beyond the scoreboard.
Current Head Basketball Coach James ‘J.D.’ Dawson, who once played for Loewendick and later served alongside him as an assistant, emphasized that this honor comes “straight from the heart.”
“From the time I was a sophomore in high school until I graduated in 1991, he believed in me, pushed me, and taught me what it truly meant to be accountable, disciplined, and committed. Those lessons stayed with me long after I left the court. His legacy isn’t just wins or banners; it’s the people he shaped, and I’m proud to be one of them.”
The renaming ceremony will be a celebration of a man described by friends and peers as humble and impactful. Dr. Peggy Jones, vice-chairperson for the School Board, noted that Loewendick’s training and motivation changed the lives of countless students. Buster Brister, a retired educator and close friend, added that while the 600 wins are historic, the true measure of the coach is seen when former players and parents approach him around town with “pure joy in their eyes” to show their appreciation.
Residents and alumni wishing to witness this special dedication should plan to arrive early.
