The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra is set to kick off its spectacular 18th performing season right here in Vero Beach with a unique blend of cinematic magic and big band swing. On Sunday, June 21, the ensemble’s Jazz Orchestra will present Sinatra & the Wonderful World of Oz, promising an afternoon of unforgettable melodies at the Emerson Center.
Under the direction of Jazz Orchestra Bandleader Andrew Cleaver, the performance will bring together two vastly different but equally beloved musical realms. The concert begins at 3:00 PM and will merge the whimsical, wide-eyed wonder of the classic film The Wizard of Oz with the effortlessly cool swagger of Frank Sinatra.
Cleaver brings an impressive pedigree to the conductor’s podium, having toured extensively as the lead saxophonist for the Air Force’s Glenn Miller Band in Europe, in addition to performing and recording with the prestigious Airmen of Note.
“This amazing jazz concert will feel a lot like a supper club performance. It turns out the yellow brick road leads straight to the Copa Room of the Sands in 1966,” stated Cleaver, highlighting the unique dual-nature of the opening concert.
The first half of the musical journey features Phil Wilson’s brilliant jazz reimagining of the treasured songs from over the rainbow. Following this, the orchestra will dive into the iconic “One O’Clock Jump,” the signature theme song of the Count Basie Orchestra.
The program will then seamlessly transition into a live recreation of Sinatra at the Sands. Widely considered by critics and fans alike as the greatest live recording Sinatra ever made, this legendary 1966 Copa Room performance will be brought back to life by Central Florida crooner Mark Romeo. Romeo will channel “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” delivering powerful renditions of classic hits.
