Vero Beach is officially sending one of its brightest young athletic stars to South Bend. Wonderful “Champ” Monds, the standout four-star quarterback for Vero Beach High School, has officially announced his college commitment to the University of Notre Dame.
Making his declaration live on The Pat McAfee Show directly from the Vero Beach High School media center, Monds chose the Fighting Irish over two other major collegiate powerhouse programs: Florida State and Ohio State. The highly touted local recruit will be taking his talents to play for head coach Marcus Freeman as part of the 2027 class.
I feel like Notre Dame has everything and this is the best fit for me,
Monds shared during his national television announcement.
Indian River County residents have watched Monds light up the Treasure Coast gridiron since he secured the starting quarterback position as a true freshman in 2024. During that breakout season, he led the Vero Beach squad to an impressive 8-4 record. His dynamic, dual-threat capabilities were on full display as he racked up 2,234 passing yards and 23 passing touchdowns, while adding another 502 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.
Despite facing adversity during the 2025 season—where an ankle injury in the opener sidelined him until the state playoffs—Monds still managed to put up elite numbers under pressure. In just four total games played, he threw for 691 yards and seven touchdowns, proving his resilience and maintaining his high value to top-tier college scouts.
Currently ranked as the 20th overall quarterback in the nation and the second-ranked quarterback in the state of Florida for his class, Monds remains a premier talent. Having recently reclassified from the class of 2028 to 2027, the local sports community can look forward to cheering him on for his final high school season in 2026 before he heads to the collegiate stage.
Key highlights of Monds’ athletic profile include:
- National Standout: Ranked as the No. 20 quarterback nationwide in the 2027 recruiting class.
- Local Phenom: Earned the coveted starting job at Vero Beach High School as a freshman.
- Elite Finalists: Selected Notre Dame over prominent offers from Florida State and Ohio State.
This massive college commitment is a point of immense pride for Vero Beach, showcasing once again the elite caliber of student-athletes developing right here on the Treasure Coast.
