A swift response from local law enforcement has led to the arrest of a teenager in connection with a violent incident that shook a central Vero Beach neighborhood earlier this week. The Vero Beach Police Department confirmed on Wednesday that a 17-year-old male is now in custody following a shooting at a local laundromat near the high school.
The incident occurred on Monday evening, December 22, around 6:30 p.m. at Sunshine Laundry Centers, located at 1405 16th Street. The location is heavily trafficked and sits in close proximity to Vero Beach High School, raising immediate concerns among residents and business owners in the area.
According to investigators, the situation unfolded when a white male—described by witnesses as wearing a black hat and dark clothing—approached a vehicle parked in the west end of the laundromat’s lot. The suspect allegedly fired multiple rounds into the occupied car before fleeing the scene on foot toward the south side of the property.
The targeted vehicle, driven by an adult with three juvenile passengers, sped away from the scene immediately after the gunfire.
Officers secured the scene and recovered four spent bullet casings. About 20 minutes later, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle on 35th Avenue.
While the driver managed to escape the immediate danger, one of the juvenile passengers did not escape unharmed. Police reported that the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the lower leg. The injury was determined to be non-life-threatening, and the juvenile was treated at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital after being dropped off at a relative’s home.
Detectives with the Vero Beach Police Department moved quickly to identify the shooter. By utilizing surveillance footage from the area and interviewing witnesses, they identified the 17-year-old suspect.
Early Wednesday morning, December 24, the investigation culminated in a tactical operation. At approximately 4:00 a.m., the department’s Critical Response Team executed an arrest warrant at a residence located near the scene of the shooting. The teen was taken into custody without further incident.
