Local law enforcement officers in **Indian River County** remain vigilant against dangerous driving behaviors, a commitment highlighted by a recent high-speed arrest in Vero Beach. A 20-year-old motorist from Fellsmere faces serious charges after being clocked driving at excessive speeds through a 35 mph zone on U.S. 1.
According to reports from the **Indian River County Sheriff’s Office**, the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on February 8. A deputy conducting routine speed enforcement in the **1100 block of U.S. 1** observed a newer-model black Mini Cooper traveling northbound at a visibly high rate of speed.
The deputy’s radar confirmed the vehicle was traveling at **86 mph**, which is 51 mph over the posted speed limit of **35 mph** for that specific stretch of road near Vero Beach.
The driver was charged under Florida’s “super speeder” law. This statute specifically targets drivers who exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more, or those who drive over 100 mph in a manner that endangers others.
The arrest report details a dangerous sequence of events as the vehicle passed the deputy. The car was reportedly traveling in the right lane and approached another motorist rapidly. To avoid a collision with the vehicle in front, the driver allegedly made an improper lane change without signaling.
The deputy initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as **Angel Mabricio Suarez Rivera**. He was subsequently handcuffed and transported to the Indian River County Jail to face charges of dangerous excessive speeding. This incident underscores the importance of adhering to posted speed limits, particularly in zones with lower limits designed to protect local traffic flow.
