Gifford native and former Vero Beach High School student Jamell Maurice Demons, internationally known as the rap artist YNW Melly, remains a focal point in one of the most high-profile legal sagas connected to Indian River County. Recently, the 26-year-old rapper refused to appear in court for a scheduled March 31 status hearing, which was intended to set a timeline for upcoming legal motions.

This absence follows a significant development in his case this past January, when prosecutors formally dropped witness tampering charges. Those specific charges had alleged that Demons attempted to dissuade a witness from testifying during his initial 2023 double-murder trial. With those secondary allegations dismissed, his legal team is now pivoting toward securing his pre-trial release. A pivotal hearing is scheduled for April 30, where his attorneys will attempt to convince a judge to grant him bond.

Jamell Demons has been held without bond at the Broward County Jail in Miramar since his arrest in February 2019, following the tragic shooting deaths of two fellow Treasure Coast residents and YNW collective members.

The primary charges keeping Demons incarcerated stem from the October 26, 2018, shooting of his childhood friends: Christopher Thomas Jr., known as YNW Juvy from Gifford, and Anthony Williams, known as YNW Sakchaser from Fort Pierce. Demons is facing first-degree murder charges in connection with their deaths. His first trial in July 2023 ended in a mistrial after a hung jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict following three days of intense deliberation.

The legal landscape surrounding the case shifted notably in late 2025 involving his co-defendant, Cortlen Henry, also known as YNW Bortlen. Henry, a 26-year-old from Vero Beach, successfully avoided a first-degree murder trial by accepting a plea agreement in September 2025.

Key developments in Cortlen Henry’s case include:

  • Pleading no contest to accessory charges related to the 2018 shooting.
  • Receiving a formal sentence of 10 years in the Florida state prison system.
  • Eliminating the risk of a life sentence or capital punishment by avoiding a full trial.

For Demons, who has collaborated with major industry figures like Ye, Juice WRLD, and Kodak Black, the stakes remain incredibly high. Prosecutors filed a notice back in April 2019 indicating their intent to seek the ultimate punishment. As he waits behind bars after a judge previously denied his pre-trial release request in May 2025, the timeline for his legal battle stretches far into the future. His official retrial for the double-murder charges is currently scheduled to begin on January 6, 2027. If convicted, the former Vero Beach local faces either a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty.
