Indian River County continues to mourn the tragic loss of one of its dedicated law enforcement officers, but a heartfelt gesture from across the state has reminded the community that they are not grieving alone. During Christmas week, a young runner in Southwest Florida took to the pavement to honor the life and service of Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow.
On Monday morning in Naples, a young boy named Zachary completed a solemn one-mile run at 11:30 a.m. carrying the “Blue Line Flag.” The run was specifically dedicated to Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow, a veteran of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office who lost her life in the line of duty last month.
The tribute was part of a national initiative by Running 4 Heroes Inc., a non-profit organization that encourages youth to participate in one-mile runs or walks to honor first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice. While the run took place miles away from the Treasure Coast, the gesture served as a powerful reminder of the brotherhood and sisterhood shared by law enforcement supporters across Florida.
Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow was a pillar of the local community, having served Indian River County for 25 years. Tragically, she was shot and killed on November 21 while serving an eviction notice. In recognition of her quarter-century of service and her bravery, she was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.
Colleagues and loved ones have described her as a devoted mother, wife, and officer who poured her heart into helping others, both while on duty and in her personal life. The loss has been deeply felt by the Sheriff’s Office, particularly during the holiday season. Sheriff Eric Flowers, who worked alongside Sweeting-Mashkow for the duration of his career, expressed the department’s enduring grief.
“Our team will feel this forever. Terri was an amazing deputy with a beautiful heart. I’m absolutely heartbroken.”
The Running 4 Heroes mission aims to ensure that the memories of fallen heroes are preserved and honored, regardless of where they served. Zachary’s run in Naples stands as a testament to Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow’s impact, ensuring her legacy is recognized far beyond the borders of Indian River County.
