The Indian River County community recently celebrated a major milestone in local workforce development as Youth Guidance hosted its largest graduating class to date. On June 4, 2026, twenty-two dedicated students successfully completed the Construction Trades Pre-Apprenticeship Program. The milestone ceremony was held at the organization’s newly renovated facility in Vero Beach, marking a proud moment for the graduates, their families, and local community leaders.
Over the course of eight months, the Class of 2026 completed a rigorous curriculum consisting of 144 hours of classroom instruction alongside extensive hands-on training. This comprehensive program provided students with foundational skills and vital industry certifications across multiple high-demand trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, HVAC, and welding.
The graduation ceremony featured inspiring remarks from key local figures who have championed the program’s mission to uplift youth. Youth Guidance Executive Director Phil Barnes addressed the packed room, followed by a keynote speech from Dr. David K. Moore, Superintendent of the School District of Indian River County. Dr. Moore emphasized how the program not only equips local youth with essential career opportunities and confidence but also actively strengthens the broader Indian River County workforce.
Watching students turn hard work and determination into real opportunities is one of the greatest rewards of this job. Youth Guidance graduates have earned accomplishments they can be proud of, and their success is a testament to the power of perseverance, skill development, and believing in their future.
Diplomas were officially presented to the graduates by Construction Trades Director Jim Buttonow, whose strong leadership and dedication were credited as driving forces behind the success of this year’s graduating class.
Since the inception of the Pre-Apprenticeship Program, Youth Guidance has achieved significant local milestones in empowering young adults. These achievements include:
- Eighty-eight teenagers and young adults have successfully earned highly sought-after industry certifications.
- Twenty-five graduates, aged eighteen and older, have successfully secured immediate employment directly within the trades.
- Twenty graduates, aged eighteen and older, have furthered their education or service by enrolling in college, specialized trade schools, or the armed forces.
This transformative program is provided at absolutely no cost to the students, thanks to robust generosity and support from the Indian River County community. Major financial contributors include The Blair Family Foundation, the Indian River County Children’s Services Advisory Committee, United Way of Indian River County, and the PNC Foundation. Crucial operational partnerships are also maintained with the Indian River County School District and Florida Training Services, Inc.
Looking ahead, the workforce initiative is poised for even greater expansion. Beginning in the fall of 2026, Florida Training Services, Inc. plans to launch a fully dedicated electrical apprenticeship program utilizing the state-of-the-art classroom and lab spaces at the Vero Beach Youth Guidance facility. This expansion will further enhance hands-on career training for local young adults, with additional plans to introduce plumbing apprenticeships in the following year.
Applications are currently open for the next Construction Trades Pre-Apprenticeship class, which is scheduled to begin in September 2026.
